What Comes Standard On A Cottage Shed
Every Cottage comes with a 72-inch nine-lite door and two windows. Two 4-foot lofts are standard, which is something no other A-frame in our line can say. The roof is architectural shingle, and shingle is the only roof the Cottage is built with.
The 8/12 pitch is the steepest roof we build, and it's what gives the Cottage its shape. It also buys you real headroom down the middle of the building instead of a ceiling that closes in on you at the walls.
Dormers are available and they look the part. They're decorative, so they don't open and they don't add usable space.

The classic cottage-shed use. Pot bench inside, tools on the wall, a window over the work surface and the whole thing sitting at the edge of the vegetable beds. The charming exterior matches the garden it serves, and the two standard lofts give you a place for bags of soil and seasonal supplies without eating floor space. It's the building that makes the garden feel finished.

How A Cottage Shed Is Built To Last
Real Materials Behind The Charm
The cottage look only lasts if the building does. Every cottage build uses LP SmartSide on the walls and trim, engineered wood that handles Carolina humidity without the swelling and rot you get from cheaper panels. The decorative touches sit on top of a structure built to the same standard as our premium series, so the gable accents and trim boards stay tight instead of working loose after a couple of seasons.
The Floor And Frame
Your building sits on 4x6 pressure-treated runners. Not 4x4, we don't use a 4x4 anywhere in the floor system.
Each runner is notched an inch, and the 2x6 pressure-treated floor joists drop down into those notches at 16 inches on center. Set into the runner, not stacked on top of it. Every joist connection gets a 4-inch Simpson hurricane screw. That's a floor frame that stays square through the haul and stays square after it's set.
Over that goes a 5/8" engineered wood floor. Premium buildings get Huber PerformMAX at 206 pounds per square foot with a 25-year warranty.

Built For Carolina Weather
Around the Sandhills a backyard building takes full summer sun, wind-driven rain off late-season storms and big swings in humidity. Cottage builds get engineered for the same wind and moisture loads as the rest of the lineup, and the siding and trim are rated for that full-sun exposure. It ships and sets the standard Speedy way, see delivery and setup for how it's placed and leveled on your site.
Sizing, Permits & Ways To Pay
Getting The Size Right
The Cottage comes in three sizes: 10x16, 10x20 and 10x24. Ten feet is as wide as it goes, and the steep 8/12 roof is the reason. Most people land on the 10x20. It gives you a work side and a storage side without eating half the backyard. You can lay out the interior in the design center when you build the order.
Placing It On Your Lot
Because a cottage shed is meant to be seen, orientation matters. Face the window wall and any porch toward the yard or the patio where you'll enjoy the view, not the fence. Make sure the delivery path is clear too: we need a foot of clearance on each side of the building anywhere it has to squeeze through, plus 6 feet clear around the final spot, and 15 feet 6 inches of overhead clearance the whole way in.
Permits And Setbacks
Permit rules are local. Square-footage thresholds, setbacks and what counts as an accessory structure change from one county to the next, and sometimes from one side of a road to the other. Your county planning or building department is the only place to get a real answer, so call them before you order and ask what they need at your address.
What we bring to that conversation is the engineering. Every Premium building has a stamped engineer print available on request, certifying the building to 150 mph wind speeds and laying out the blocking and anchoring schedule. That's usually the document a permit office wants to see. We have stamped prints for North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia, and there's no charge for them.
Your dealer has been through this with a lot of customers nearby and is happy to talk it through with you. Just get the final word from the county.

Bring us what your board requires and we'll build to it. Vinyl siding, architectural shingles, custom paint colors, shorter wall heights and smaller or custom footprints are all available, which covers most of what covenants ask for. We can't approve your building for you, so get your board's sign-off in writing before you order.
