Why Wilmington Properties Need Coastal-Grade
Storage
The Cape Fear coast isn't gentle on buildings. Hurricanes Florence (2018) and Isaias (2020)
reminded everyone what happens to structures that aren't built for this area. Standing water,
100+ mph gusts and days of sustained rain expose every weak point in a cheap shed.
Salt air accelerates corrosion. Wilmington sits between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic. The
salt breeze reaches every neighborhood in New Hanover County. Metal fasteners, hinges and
hardware corrode faster here than anywhere inland. Our builds use hardware selected specifically
for coastal exposure.
Flood zones cover large portions of Wilmington and Brunswick County. Many lots near the river,
the Intracoastal Waterway and low-lying areas have elevation requirements. Our pier foundation
system elevates the building above ground level and allows water to flow underneath rather than
pooling against the walls.
Sandy coastal soil drains fast but shifts easily. A shed sitting flat on sand will settle
unevenly after the first heavy storm. Concrete block piers distribute the weight properly and
keep the structure level long-term.
